The arm triangle isn’t about squeezing hard—it’s about positioning their arm correctly. Once trapped, their own shoulder compresses their carotid. You just maintain the frame.

Trap The Arm

Their arm must be trapped against their own neck. Push it across their face if needed. Without this, there’s no choke—just a head squeeze.

Head Pressure

Your head goes on the opposite side. Temple to temple. This closes the gap and prevents them from turning into you.

Shoulder Drive

Drop your shoulder into their neck. The squeeze comes from driving your shoulder down while their trapped arm pushes from the other side.

The arm triangle works from multiple dominant positions. The mechanics are identical—only your base changes.

Most Common 01

Side Control
Arm Triangle

The classic setup. From side control, walk their arm across their face, lock the figure-four, switch your hips to the other side, and squeeze.

High Percentage 02

Mount
Arm Triangle

From mount, they push on your chest or shoulder. Trap that arm, slide to high mount, lock the choke, then dismount to the finish side.

Sneaky 03

North-South
Transition

From north-south, you have easy access to the head and arm. Slide into the arm triangle position while they’re disoriented from the pressure.

Finishing
Position

The finish requires switching your hips. Most people try to finish from side control—but the choke is tightest when you’re on the opposite side.

  • Lock The Figure-Four

    Hand grabs bicep, other hand behind your head. Lock this BEFORE switching sides.

  • Switch Your Hips

    Move to the OPPOSITE side of their trapped arm. Your hip goes to the mat on the finishing side.

  • Sprawl And Squeeze

    Walk your hips back (sprawl position) while squeezing your elbows together. The tap comes fast.

3 Mistakes
That Kill Your Arm Triangle

Arm Not Trapped

If their arm isn’t across their own neck, you’re just squeezing their head. Walk their arm across their face BEFORE locking the choke.

Wrong Side Finish

Trying to finish from the same side you set up leaves space. You MUST switch to the opposite side—move toward their trapped arm to tighten the choke.

Head Too High

Your head must be LOW and tight against theirs. If your head is up, there’s a gap. Temple to temple, ear to ear—close every space.

Windows

The arm triangle appears when they give you head and arm access. Hunt for these moments.

Bridge Escape

From side control, they bridge and push. Perfect—use their push to walk their arm across.

Mount Defense

They push your chest from mount. Trap the arm, slide to high mount, lock the choke.

Guard Pass Complete

You’ve just passed guard. Their framing arm is already in position—capitalize immediately.

Americana Bait

Attack the americana. They defend by bringing elbow to ribs. Switch to arm triangle.
